ACA International Continues Needed Push For TCPA Reform

In the face of continued uncertainty and apparent stalls in anything resembling forward progress, ACA International participated in another push last week to reform the outdated Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA).

A letter was issued to the FCC requesting necessary changes and updates to TCPA. From ACA International's website:

Like so many professional sports teams nationwide, the Lakers offered fans the opportunity to send a text message to get involved with an in-game promotion. In this case, the Lakers' production team offered to have fans' text messages displayed on the "jumbotron."

The Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) is in the news once again, and once again the news is relevant to collection agencies.

As passed along by Patrick Lunsford of InsideArm.com, three ARM companies and Capital One came to a $75 million settlement in a recent TCPA case. That is the largest such settlement that we have ever seen.

In short, there needs to be some common sense.

Why TCPA Reform is Needed

Do you have a land line telephone? There's at least a moderately good chance that you don't.

If you do still have one, you likely know somebody who has opted to ditch their land line and handle everything with their cell phone. When they fill out forms for flights or online orders, they simply put the same number twice under "Home Phone" and "Cell Phone."

Imagine the surprise to a college freshman, in 2013, who comes to learn that they will still have an old-fashioned land line phone in their dorm room. Imagine how seldom it is used.
